Thanks Mike,

That was actually the problem, the server admin had uninstalled the x2go server during an upgrade.  I thought the problem was on my end, but it was a server issue.  Can we make this ticket a suggestion instead of a bug?  I spent a lot of time messing with my side; if the error had said something like "Error message from server: <...>" I would have known where to look first.

Are you sure that x2goserver is installed on the remote system??? The error you observes 99% hints at the client connecting to a machine that does not have X2Go Server installed.
