Message #5 received at submit@bugs.x2go.org (full text, mbox, reply):
[Message part 1 (text/plain, inline)]
Package: x2goserver
Version: 4.0.1.19-010640ubuntu16.04.1
With the most recent updates to Ubuntu 16.04 (moving kernel to 4.4.0-18-generic Apr 6) x2goserver suddenly fails to start. The relevant error message in .xsession-x2go-errors is:
13 XSession-x2go: X session started for ddd at Fri Apr 8 17:52:25 EDT 2016
14 localuser:ddd being added to access control list
15 /etc/x2go/Xsession: 3: [: x: unexpected operator
16 mate-session[3684]: GLib-GIO-CRITICAL: g_settings_schema_source_lookup: assertion 'source != NULL' failed
17 mate-session[3684]: GLib-GIO-ERROR: No GSettings schemas are installed on the system
18 aborting...
I have Ubuntu 16.04 installed on a physical machine and also as a KVM virtual machine. In each case after the most recent updates x2goserver fails to start with the same message as above.

I have exactly the same problem, in a VM in Xenserver, perfectly
reproducible.
The working system is based on an Ubuntu Server 16.04 64 Bit Beta 2,
once I upgrade, X2Go stops working, with the same kind of error message.

Xsession-x2go mechanism, using STARTUP="mate-session"

Once I revert to a snapshot before the upgrade, X2go works again,
upgrading one more time and it fails again..
Attached are lists of packages and version before and after the upgrade,
maybe that helps.
Kind regards,
Rudolf

Message #15 received at 1022@bugs.x2go.org (full text, mbox, reply):
I also get the same error. However:
Add the lines:
export GSETTINGS_SCHEMA_DIR=/usr/share/gconf/schemas/
export XDG_DATA_DIRS=/usr/share/gconf/schemas/
to your .profile, and things will start.
XFCE and Mate are completely borked. LXDE still runs file. Seems like a GTK issue.

Confirmed with Ubuntu Mate 16.04. However, the suggested workaround in the
previous post results in a lightdm login loop. Link to forum thread about

I managed to get Mate in 16.04 working by using system dafault value for
XDG_DATA_DIRS.
I set in .profile
export GSETTINGS_SCHEMA_DIR=/usr/share/mate:/usr/share/mate:/usr/local/share/:/usr/share/:/var/lib/snapd/desktop
export XDG_DATA_DIRS=/usr/share/mate:/usr/share/mate:/usr/local/share/:/usr/share/:/var/lib/snapd/desktop
