This seems to be a problem caused by the default xfce4 keyboard 
settings.
I've removed the application shortcuts with the tool 
xfce4-keyboard-settings.
After a new login the two keys <tab> and 'p' work as expected.
Alternatively you can edit this file
   
~/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/xfce4-keyboard-shortcuts.xml
