Package: x2goserverVersion: 4.1.0.2-0~1642~ubuntu18.04.1
I updated x2go server from the stable repo on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS recently and after the update no QT application works anymore. All QT applications crash with the following message:
The X11 connection broke: Maximum allowed requested length exceeded (code 4)

For example starting vlc output the following:
VLC media player 3.0.3 Vetinari (revision 3.0.3-1-0-gc2bb759264)[000056315dfa6570] main libvlc: VLC wird mit dem Standard-Interface ausgeführt. It worked perfectly before the update.

Hello,

i can confirm this.
I updated x2goserver (not sure exactly, but at latest from 4.1.0.0-0~1517~ubuntu16.04.1 <https://launchpad.net/~x2go/+archive/ubuntu/stable/+sourcepub/8829889/+listing-archive-extra> )

to "x2goserver 4.1.0.2-0~1642~ubuntu16.04.1 " from the stable ppa today on a Xubuntu 16.04.4 system and afterwards the Qt application qbittorrent, which remained unchanged during the update, no longer started and gave this error:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The X11 connection broke: Maximum allowed requested length exceeded (code 4)
XIO:  fatal IO error 22 (Invalid argument) on X server ":50.0"
after 428 requests (424 known processed) with 0 events remaining.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I took this as an opportunity to update to Xubuntu 18.04.1.

After that the same error showed up with "x2goserver 4.1.0.2-0~1642~ubuntu18.04.1".

Other programs like Firefox and Thunderbird are working.

Regards,

Reggie

Hello,

I also updated x2gosever to 4.1.0.2 from the official Debian stretch
repository.
Since the I am having the same problems as the original poster. Qt
applications will not open at all, other programs work perfectly fine. My
qt version is 5.7.1 and I am using the latest Debian stretch version. I
hope this helps!

Ente

Same here. Upgraded my Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. After the upgrade only some of my QT apps work. Stipend wallet works but Apollon and Deviant do not open at all.

Since the update I'm also having high CPU usage in Openbox. Logs are filliing up with Print error while x2go is running. If I close x2go CPU usage is normal and error reporting stops.

Here is the .xsession-x2go-errors log of a failed QT app that doesn't open nestled in the gazillion Openbox messages that occur running x2go:

Subject: reenabled BIG-REQUESTS extension

We also experienced this issue with an QT application. We could track it down to the by default disabled BIG-REQUESTS extension in version 4.1.0.1.
Commenting the line

X2GO_NXAGENT_DEFAULT_OPTIONS+=" -extension BIG-REQUESTS"

in x2goagent.options resolved this issue for us.

Note, that this applies only for new sessions.

Best regards, Jahn

Thank you Jahn!

Confirm your fix also works with x2goserver 4.1.0.2-0~1642~ubuntu16.04.1. I commented the BIG-REQUESTS line in /etc/x2go/x2goagent.options. Rebooted the session and QT apps are working again.

To fix the performance issues I also changed to XFCE instead of Openbox which improved performance significantly. I think Cairo-Dock was ultimately the issue but I'm happy with XFCE so moving on...

Commenting the line:

X2GO_NXAGENT_DEFAULT_OPTIONS+=" -extension BIG-REQUESTS"

in x2goagent.options does resolve the issue, *but* there is a comment above that line:

# Disable BIG-REQUESTS, nx-libs does not implement this extension correctly.
# Leads to all sorts of weird crashes if left enabled.

…which unfortunately has proven to be true for my instances. The performance and reliability of x2go has dropped substantially since commenting the line.

Can we please raise the priority of this bug to restore performance?

Can you name some problematic apps that crash with the line commented? I
have a patch that might help. I would like to test a bit.

The main one is Rstudio 1.1.456 which was installed from the .deb package available from https://download1.rstudio.org/rstudio-xenial-1.1.456-amd64.deb (64.9MB).

Without the workaround, RStudio fails to launch with the same sort of error reported earlier in this thread. With the workaround, users reported “…quite difficult to navigate, slow response from server. In particular but not only when using R studio. As well as constant flickering of server window” and "The server window is often “flickering”, and response time is very slow."

Regards, Adrian.

I have tried that version but since I have no R experience I cannot
see any problems - neither with an old nx version nor with the latest
(and greatest ;-) developer version.

Without BIG-REQUESTS it fails with a GL message which indicates that
it is using OpenGL which is slow on NX. Maybe rstudio offers a way to
switch off OpenGL usage. I expect it to be fast then.

I seems there have been ways to configure that in rstudio (see
https://github.com/rstudio/rstudio/issues/3185) but my version 1.1,456
does not offer these settings.

You can TRY adding "-extension GLX" (which disables the GLX extension)
to x2goagent.options and see what happens.

Uli

Thanks for investigating. I¹ll give those suggestions a try and report
back soon.

If I set ³ -extension GLX² and " -extension BIG-REQUESTS², launching
Rstudio produces the error:

Could not initialize OpenGL for RasterGLSurface, reverting to
RasterSurface.
rstudio: Fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X
server :53.0.

The daily builds of Rstudio 1.2 appear to have introduced a configuration
option to set the type of renderer (GL, software, etc), but the daily .deb
build won¹t install on Ubuntu 14.04 due to unmet dependencies.
