Subject: On Debian systems (wheezy/sid): Menus in Libreoffice and some other applications are not rendered properly

[Message part 1 (text/plain, inline)]
Package: x2goagent
Version: 3.5.0.15
Severity: grave

for the record: there currently is a grave bug in Debian testing
(forwarded to freedesktop.org) that describes a rendering problem of
GTK based application menus.
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=666564

I can reproduce these problems with latest x2goagent version, as well.

However, I am not sure, to what respect we can solve this in X2Go. As
it is a bug in the Xserver code of Xorg, we finally may have to patch
the solution into x2goagent sometime (or search for it by ourselves)
but we also may not...

Because: the problem does not occur on Ubuntu precise as X2Go Server.
It only occurs on Debian wheezy/sid as X2Go Server. This leads me to
the conclusion that the issue has to be solved inside Debian and we
will be happy in X2Go once that is fixed.

This bug is for documenting the progress of the X2Go team and others
on this issue.

1. DESKTOP SESSIONS

  * Menus are rendered ok under Ubuntu precise
  * Menus are sometimes rendered ok under Debian, sometimes lines are missing

2. ROOTLESS SESSIONS

  * Libreoffice (from wheezy/sid) does not have any text in the menus at all
  * On Ubuntu precise Libreoffice looks ok...

Greets,
Mike

I can *not* confirm this - Libreoffice works fine here. Attaching lists
of installed packages, sources.list and debian version for comparison.
Feel free to request more info. Could it be a client-side X-Server issue?

Can you please test with x2goagent 3.5.0.15? It should be available in
the main repos.

Only test on a non-production server, please.

Mike

Now:

dpkg -l | grep nx
rc freenx-media 0.7.3+teambzr104-0freenxteam1~intrepid1 i386 Remote
desktop/application/thin-client server media support
ii libnx-x11 2:3.5.0.15-0+wheezy~main~328~build1 i386 nx-X11
ii nxagent 2:3.5.0.15-0+wheezy~main~328~build1 i386 NX agent

Same result, works fine for me, I can see all the menus in LibreOffice.

Could it be that your locale setting is somehow messed up?
I'm using LANG="de_DE.UTF-8" and I'm seeing all menus in German.

locale-gen
Generating locales (this might take a while)...
  de_DE.UTF-8... done
Generation complete.

> Only test on a non-production server, please.

Wheezy isn't stable yet, so it doesn't belong on a production server
anyways.

I can reproduce this problem with both Debian/wheezy and Ubuntu/quantal.

Downgrading to libcairo 1.10 makes the fonts readable again. This is
not an acceptable solution, as this cannot be done without breaking
package dependency constraints.

It seems that this problem can be "worked around" by changing the
anti-alias settings.

For me, setting font anti-aliasing from "None" to "argb" in the
'gnome-tweak-tool' or the KDE settings center unbroke the unreadable
fonts in openoffice. However, this seems to be system dependent. It
has been reported that on other systems, any of these three settings
do.

It remains unclear to me what the actual underlying problem is.

thanks

Hi all,

I can happily report that the LibreOffice menu item rendering now
works perfect in Debian wheezy and Debian unstable when run in X2Go
sessions (desktop/rootless).

So closing #35.
